How to get to Zanzibar

The island of Zanzibar, generally known as the Spice Island, (85 x 38km) has been part of
Tanzania since unification on 26 April 1964 between Tanganyika and Zanzibar and gave birth
to a new country Tan Zan ia (Tan from Tanganyika and Zan from Zanzibar) = Tanzania.

To get to Zanzibar, visit the island, the spice plantations, see the famous Red Colobus Monkeys
or swim with dolphins, you can call Salim Abdullah from the agency Sama Tours in Zanzibar

Take a flight to Dar Es Salaam, joint capital shared with Dodoma, then cross the sound on a
fast ferry, preferably "Sea Star Services Limited", who do the crossing in less than 2 hours
for $30. Next, you can go to the hotel Baghani house tel: +255 54 235 654

Shangani (take a taxi) in Stone Town (the old town). If you like fish, pasta or pizzas go and
see Emilio at "Amore mio" restaurant by the beach in Stone Town in the Italian quarter.
He will give you a warm welcome and delicious food. http://www.amoremio-zanzibar.it

The famous dhows and motor boats that have been navigating
the Indian Ocean since the dawn of time.

How do you see the Dolphins and swim with them?

Before going to the beach and boarding a motor boat to the open sea (45 minutes) be aware that you are
going to the open sea and that continual swimming and diving is tiring, and that you do not realise straight
away how tired you are. Salim will take you out to swim with dolphins for a price of $40
(meals, flippers and snorkels included)

Remember to buy a disposable underwater camera in your home country before departure
(around £10) because you do not need to dive very deep to photograph the dolphins

Very important: do not put sun protection or tanning lotion on before entering the water
because dolphins hate the smell! Cover up with clothes instead.

A few lines on the Dolphins of Zanzibar
by Philippe de Almeida

General information:

The dolphins in Zanzibar are part of the sub-species Tursiops truncantus aduncus, whose distribution
area is the Indo-Pacific Ocean as well as the Red Sea. They can measure up to 3.40m in length with
a weight of up to 350kg, pale grey on the back and flanks, the stomach is white and, in the oldest
dolphins , dotted with grey patches. They generally eat fish and small cephalopods.

The most commonly known of these cetaceans are the dolphins of Shark bay in Western Australia
that have already woven links with Aboriginal fishermen for several generations. Nowadays
interactions between humans and dolphins are regulated by Australian government rangers
due to large-scale tourism development that is becoming dangerous for the dolphins.

encounter with the Dolphins of Zanzibar
